001 ui vs ux

Hey guys welcome back.

Now that we spent last section talking about the specific topics of HDMI and skater and by now you've got those into your head and you understand those.

I want to take a bit of a more general approach now and just talk about process visualization as a whole concept.

So one of the things that as you're designing your interfaces you really need to be conscientious is you x.

So here are these two terms that are all over the place UI and you X and now is when I want you to really start thinking about them.

You I mean is user interface and everybody who knows how to put a control on a screen is now a UI designer.

You can design an interface and as a designer you have your own specific goals in mind when you're creating your interface.

You want it to be pretty you want it to be symmetrical you want it to have pleasing colors that you like.

You wanted to have logos and names on it that show who created it and where the system came from.

These are designer considerations.

These are NOT operator considerations.

So user interface is just putting a screen together and throwing some controls on it.

And if you do that and it's got the useful information that the operator needs and it's got the controls that the operator needs as an interface designer you say hey my job is done here I've created an interface and it works OK.

But for the professional for the one who is really good at designing systems that people love.

We take it a step further and we say but what is the U.S.

What is the user experience going to be like now when I'm as an operator looking at a screen that shows me all these nice overlays and it shows animations and it has no audio playing in the background and photo realistic images.

You know when the screen takes two seconds to load and I have to load this screen a hundred times a day I don't care about the flowery background and all the pretty animations.

On the contrary it impressed me the first time I saw it.

And about five minutes later I was sick of it and I did never want to see it again.

So my having a bad experience.

I was impressed at the beginning and I said you that's pretty.

But now I have to click a button and wait until your stupid animations go past until I can finally get to the information that I'm waiting for.

And I have to do this over and over and over again.

I tell you what my user experience is terrible at this point even though you've created a big pretty nice amazing complicated sophisticated modern interface.

My experience is terrible when I'm using this system.

There are certain processes I have to do maybe I have to manually write down some values or log some data off of the H in my just to show that I was doing some checks every day or something like that.

These are real world things that happen.

Well when I have to click into 10 different pages to get all the information I need I'm not having a good experience I'm miserable because it's taking me way too long.

I write I click I write I click into one page which leads me to something that allows me to click into the next page and then finally into the one I need then I write down some more values.

Be honest you're getting sick of hearing me describe it right.

好的。
Good.

Now imagine the operator that has to actually do this every single day.

So think about the little guy when you're building your interface.

You are an artist.

I understand that you're a smart person and you know how to do really cool stuff on an interface.

I understand that as well but you need to understand the other side of the coin.

I'm a humble operator and I have a job to do.

And your interface is either going to make my job easy or is it going to make my job hard.

And all of your sophisticated design skills aren't going to impress me.

Making my job faster and easier and making the equipment run better that's going to impress me.

Every time 10 times out of nine.

So think about the experience of your user.

If you have one single control which is filling up an entire screen that's not really practical.

I have to go to 10 different screens to do the same job just to do one process.

If I have way too much garbage on the screen and I have to hunt and squint my eyes to find it.

And then when the sun's shining on the screen or someone's got the light on in the office behind me I can't even see what I'm looking at because everything's so small again it's not useful.

So help me out.

As an operator.

Help me out and think about my job and what I have to do and what I need to see when and where when you're setting up your screens.

Don't think like an artist don't think like a designer don't think like somebody who's going to create something that's visually and hysterically pleasing just to you.

Yes aesthetics are a valid consideration make it pretty.

Make it good.

Make it sophisticated.

I'm not saying don't do those things.

I'm just saying never do those things when it compromises the user's experience.
